A Comparative Study on Paternal Style of Psychiatric Patients and Non-Psychiatric People


Abstract
This study on paternal style of psychiatric patients and non-psychiatric people was applied to people who were divided into two groups from Aug. 21. to Sep. 7. 1994.
One is fathers of psychiatric in-patients of 2 hospitals in Pusan and the other is inhabitants who have non-psychiatric children in 4 Dongs of Pusan.
This study is purposed to identify the difference of fathers real and ideal perceptions of their relations with children between fathers of psychiatric patients and non-psychiatric people.
And also to investigate the correlation between real and ideal perceptions in two groups mentioned above.
The data were collected by the questionnaire method and analyzed by the use of percentage, x2-test, t-test and Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
The results of analysis were as follows:
1. The psychiatric patients¢¥ fathers had lower score of consistency(p<0.05) and higher score of control through guilt and anxiety than the result of non-psychiatric people¢¥s fathers in their real relations with children(p<0.05).
But, there was no significant difference in the score of respect for autonomy, child-centeredness, paternal temper and detachment between two groups(p>0.05).
2. The psychiatric patients¢¥ fathers had higher score of control through guilt and anxiety than the result of non-psychiatric people¢¥s fathers in their ideal relations with children(p<0.01).
But, there was no significant difference in the score of respect for autonomy, child-centeredness and paternal temper and detachment between two groups(p>0.05).
3. There was no significant correlation between real and ideal score of all the behavior types in the psychiatric patients¢¥ fathers groups(p>0.05) except child-centeredness and control through guilt and anxiety(y-0.62,7-0.63, p<0.05).
Either, there was no significant correlation between real and ideal score of all the behavior types in the psychiatric patient¡¯s fathers groups(p>0.05) except respect for autonomy and consistency(y=0.41, y=0.60, p<0.05).
